History & Facts

DeWalt was founded by Raymond E. DeWalt, who invented the adjustable radial arm saw in 1922. In December 1924, he founded the DeWalt Products company at Pennsylvania. Over the next two decades, DeWalt grew considerably. By 1947, the company reorganized and became reincorporated. The new name of the company was DeWalt Inc.

However, it was only two years later that DeWalt Inc. was purchased by American Machine & Foundry Co. Inc. This made DeWalt Inc. a subsidiary, a role that it has maintained ever since. In 1960, DeWalt Inc. was sold to Black & Decker. By 1989, Black & Decker had divested itself of the radial arm branch of the company, which included DeWalt Inc.

By 1992, Black & Decker reinvigorated DeWalt, intending to fortify it with higher quality, high-end power tools. As the DeWalt subsidiary grew, it took over ELU, a German woodworking power tool company in 1994. The technology gained was used to expand their line of power tools. The result was that by 2001, DeWalt had over 200 power tools and 800 accessories to its name.

Ever since, DeWalt has grown considerably under the Black & Decker name. DeWalt merged with Porter-Cable in 2004. By 2011, the company launched a line of hand tools which included hammers, adjustable wrenches, tape measures, utility knives, and the like. This was expanded two years later with a line of ratchets, sockets, and wrenches.

Fun Fact:

Did you know that DeWalt launched a smartphone? Although the rugged phone was ideal for workplace use, it did not gain much popularity.

By the end of 2015, DeWalt had established seven manufacturing facilities in the US, creating products from parts that came from around the world. A year later, DeWalt expanded into the electronics world by creating an Android-based smartphone. A smartphone meant for use in extreme temperature conditions.

The following year, 2016, the company expanded further by creating the FlexVolt hybrid voltage battery pack. A power source that could be used in several different tools and devices. By 2017, DeWalt had begun the integration of BlueTooth technology in its drills and impact divers. These high-end power tools are integrated with a mobile app that allows for diagnostics, custom tool profiles, and even fleet management tracking.

Since then, DeWalt has expanded even more out of power tools to create a line of battery-powered lawnmowers. And recently launched its POWERSTACK battery technology which created a battery platform which uses lithium-ion technology and incorporates pouch-style for its power tools, a first of its kind for the industry.

The company is also committed to sustainability and to its growing line of cordless outdoor power equipment.

As DeWalt continues to expand its global manufacturing footprint across the United States, Brazil, Czech Republic, China, Italy, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, it remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability.

From its humble beginnings with Raymond E. DeWalt’s invention of the radial arm saw to the revolutionary POWERSTACK battery technology and beyond, DeWalt has consistently set the standard for excellence in the power tool industry.
