DIY Step by Step Guide with Pictures

If you prefer to read the step by step instructions, here it is.

Step 1:  Cut the Wood

Take a round wood piece of approximately 1-inch to 1 ½ inch. It need not be perfectly round. Slice them into smaller ¼-inch thick pieces. A vertical bandsaw is the perfect tool for the job. If you have any type of power saw then use it. Othwerwise you can easily do it manually with a hacksaw.

If you find this step too much of a hassle, you can also buy readymade wood slices from Amazon with pre-drilled hole.

Step 2:  Polish the Wood

Sand the thickness of the wood to smoothen the cut surface. Sanding will also reveal the beautiful texture of the wood.

A drum and belt sander is perfect for the tool. But you can also sand it with a regular belt sander or do it manually using sandpaper.

Step 3: Plan and Write Your Message

Take the wooden circle and start planning your message inside.
Write Christmas Decoration
I’ve decided to engrave “Let it snow,” but you can type anything you want like Merry Christmas or Jingle bells or Happy Holidays. You can even put some name and give it as a Christmas gift. Imagine your kid seeing the Christmas ornament with his or her name on it.
Take your pencil and start writing your message and planning how it will look like the best. If you are not happy with the look, you can erase it and write it again. That is why is this step on.

Step 4: Engrave Your Message

Leave the soldering iron to get hot before you start engraving your message. This step will be slightly longer, and you will need to be patient here. Just go slowly repeating the letters that you’ve typed previously.

Maybe you will need to stay a little longer at some places depending on the wood that you are using. You can also decorate it around the message and make some snowflakes for example.

Step 5: Drill the Hole

In the next step, you will need to create a hole so you can hang the décor on the tree. For this purpose, I’ve used a drilling machine. Make sure you measure where you want the hole to be, you would like to be in the middle, so the text looks nice when you hang it on the tree.

Take a little piece of garden wire and create a loop that will go through the hole you’ve made. Now you can make a thread out of rustic ribbon so you can hang it on the tree.

To finish the decoration, I’ve added two bows of satin ribbon, one red and one green on the bottom below the message.
